ABSTRACT

Smallsssss scale enterprise have been defined as a business owned, managed, controlled by one or two persons. It’s family influence in decision making has an undifferentiated organizational structure, has a relatively small share of market and employs not less than fifty people.

The researcher studied the factors and conditions that affect the operation of small scale business and found out the problems facing the small scale enterprise. Data were collected and analyzed and the following findings were made; poor technology base is a serious problem facing small industries in Nigeria, infrastructural problems such as electricity, communication and water supply are serious problems of small scale enterprises lies on the attitude of government and it’s policies, these among other are the findings the researcher made. Further research should be conducted on other variables that can improve the performance of small scale enterprise generally in Nigeria and Orumba North government area in particular.

 

 

 

 

 

CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

Every business operation involves both

physical, economic and human factors and conditions and these are very vital for proper and magnificent economic growth of any organization or industry. These factors can provide opportunities for growth or pose a problem which can lead to the death of a small scale enterprise.

The economic growth of any nation cannot be achieved without the investment of small scale enterprise. This is because of its contributions in the area like job creation, stimulation of indigenous entrepreneurship, transformation of traditional industries to modern business units.

Furthermore, small scale enterprise has received very little attention despite the fact that it provides employment for appropriately triple the number engaged in large scale business as well as playing their roles of developing our economy which is very crucial.

The small scale businesses as well as the large scale business exist in an ever changing condition, where they must interact with and respond to many forces or factors.

Some of these factor are:

Social-cultural, political, technological, infrastructural, legal, ecological, competition, economical and time

The above listed environmental factors provide opportunities and threats to the small scale business owners depending on the strength and weakness of the business units, where the opportunities within sometimes brings about growth and development, on the other hand if the environmental problems or threats are present then the business will have to curb or provide solution to the problems.

The environmental factors therefore have a vital role to play in the business judging from the above listed facts.

The researcher is of the view that a proper analysis of the performance of rock tama pure water Nanka as a small scale business will go a long way in contributing to the growth and development of small scale business in Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State and Nigeria at large.

It is expected in this research that the analysis will help the government in the best way to exploit business opportunity and how best to deal with threats in the small scale enterprise.

This is why it is important to reconsider the problems hindering the growth of small scale enterprise, especially rock tama pure water Nanka.

1.2 Statement of the problem

Many Nigerians have the attitude of mistrust towards local enterprise and prefer foreign made products to locally made ones. Those perception of Nigerians reduce the amount of patronage to the locally made goods thereby living the small enterprise with insufficient fund to pay their taxes and reducing their capacity to impact positively in the development of rural communities in orumba north local government area.

The political instability which brings frequent changes in the policies of government has constituted a big problem to the development of small scale business in Orumba North local Government Area.

Finally, there are many problems facing the small scale enterprise in Nigeria such as corruption, inadequacy of infrastructures among others.

1.3 purpose of the study

The general purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of small scale enterprise in orumba north local government area. This aims at finding the information about the following

  1. to ascertain whether small scale enterprises has any positive impact in the development of rural community in orumba north local government area.
  2. To investigate the impact of government policies in the development of small scale business in orumba north local government area.
  • To find out the problem of small scale industries in orumba north local government area.

1.4 Significance of the study

The researcher has the hope that this project would at the end help to educate small scale business owners and government on how to tackle the problems facing the small scale enterprises in Orumba North local government Area.

This research work will help Rock Tama pure water Nanka immensely, because it will make for its effectiveness and development.

This project will also contribution its little quota in the proper analysis of the environmental forces in the development of small scale enterprise in Orumba North Local Government Area.

It is therefore useful to the federal, state and local government since it will help in the development of small scale business thereby boosting industrialization as well as economic development.

Other researchers may have interest in the work just for the sake of more information and additional knowledge.

1.5  Research Question

In order to carry out this research work, the following questions were put forward for answers;

  1. To what extent does small scale enterprises impact positively to the development of rural communities in Orumba North local government area?
  2. To what extent does government policies impact in the development of small scale business in Orumba North local government area?
  3. What are the problems facing the operation of small scale business in Orumba North local government area?

 

 

 

1.6  Scope of the Study

The study covers the investigation into the performance of small scale enterprise in Orumba North Local Government Area with rock Tama Pure water Nanka as a case study.

1.7 Limitation of the Study

One of the greatest challenges faced while carrying out this research work which could have marked the success of this project if not the other enormous and cumbersome effort added is the collection of questionnaire distributed. Some of the questionnaires distributed to the workers were not returned. This limited the much information needed.

Time factor is another contention to the research work. This is as a result of attending my lectures and some other activities which I need not to avoid.

 

 

1.8  Definition of Terms

Investigation: Is the act or process of investigating a     careful search or examination in order to discover facto etc.

Investigation can also be defined as a searching inquiring for ascertaining facts detailed or capital examination.

Small Scale Business: Is a business owned managed controlled by one or two persons, is family influenced in decision making has an undifferentiated organizational structure has a relatively small share or market and employs less than fifty people.

Small scale enterprise can also be defined as those with total investment of between one hundred thousand Naira and two million naira excluding land but including working capital.

Performance: Can be defined as the action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task or function.

Performance can also defined as the results of activities of an organization or investment over a given period.

Business Environment: Means all of the internal and external factors that affects how the company functions including employees, customer, management, supply and demand and business regulations.

It can be defined as the sum total of all external and internal factors that influence a business.

Enterprises: Is defined as a project or undertaking typically one that is difficult or requires effort.

Under capitalization: Can be defined as a situation whereby the company does not have sufficient capital to conduct normal business operations and pay creditors.

Indiscipline: Indiscipline is defined as a lack of control of punishment.

Rudimentary: Is a pretty long and fancy words for a word that just means stripped down or at a very early or stage.

Catalyst: Can be defined as a substances that causes a chemical reaction to happen more quickly. It is an event of person causing a change.

Challenges: A call to someone to participate in a competitive situation or fight to decide who is superior in terms of ability or strength.

Realistic: Is defined as having or showing a sensible and practical idea of what can be achieved or expected.

Communication: Can be defined as the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feeling to someone etc.

It is a two-way process of reaching mutual understanding, in which participants not only exchange (encode-decode) information, news ideas and feeling but also create and share meaning.

Industries: Is an economic activity concerned with the processing of raw materials and manufactures of goods in factories.

Population: is a summation of all the organisms of geographical area, and have the capability of inter breeding.
