ABSTRACT

This research was conducted to find out how automation computer technology have gone a long way in assisting the overall growth of new generation banks particularly Diamond Bank. Questionnaires were administered to randomly chosen staff, customers to sample their opinions on the effect of technology acquisition on the quality of services rendered to them by the effected Bank. Diamond Bank. The banks public relation manager as well as the marketing manager were interviewed and a lot of information relating to service efficiency, customers enactment were obtained. I made a concerted effort, which led to the successful obtainment of the number of the Bank’s customers before the automation and computer acquisition and what the figure became after the acquisition. Profit figure and overhead costs, after the acquisition, profit figure and overhead costs, after introduction and acquisition were obtained. The method of simple percentage was used to analyze the data collected from the questionnaire and the spearmans correlation coefficient was used to test the impact of computer technology on the overall growth of new generation bank’s practically Diamond Bank. It was found out that the quality of automation introduces and the standard and quality of computer network in use was such that guaranteed speedy and efficient in services and transaction. The rank correlation obtained show that computer technology both have a tremendous impact to the growth of firms that acquired them. The conclusion is therefore that it leads to tremendous growth of the banks that apply them or put it into use. They guarantee speed efficiency and high productivity which gives room to the maximization of profits. My recommendation is that commercial banks who are still operating manually and have not yet introduced the use of the system should do so without delay and to avoid the waste of resources that could have been used elsewhere profitably.

CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION
    • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The monotony  and the drudgery to which workers were subjected in industries  as a result of  manual division of labour in the early eighteen century disappeared with the introduction of automation.

Ever since mankind have been performing their roles in the industries with tremendous relief using the benefit or automation and machinery to increase output in the industries especially in the nineteen centuries.

A great deal of time has been saved in the industries while efficiency and output have been reassured introduction. Until recently the use of computer technology in service industries which have relieved so many bank and insurance staff of their desk position have brought in greater efficiency, more output, time consciousness and fraud proof programs. Computers are also  increasingly used in solving problems that relate to business, science engineering education and all facts of human endeavor. Problems experienced in data processing also lead to the development of computers.

Computers have  also been criticized by researchers and management staff in  manufacturing and service industries it is alleyed   that computers enormous powers, which can be used constructively and destructively, information processes by computer is organized and formalized in a manner in which many people dislike and find alien.

However, in spite of the criticism on computer, it has made a great deal of impact on the growth of commercial Bank particularly Diamond Bank. The computer Network introduced by Diamond Bank in most of its branches nation-wide enables their customers to avoid the risk of carrying cash in their business transaction as the system enable them to draw cash from any part of the country where the computers on-line system, the flex cube system have been introduced by many of the nation’s leading bank and the benefits are tremendous. Ability to draw cash from any of the Diamond’s bank branches irrespective of where one’s account is maintaining has to draw more customers to the bank.

The Bank’s deposit level and interest earning capacity with the Central Bank of Nigeria has increased. The introduction of wide range of automation and various computer appliances by diamond bank has brought mixed blood of speed, accuracy and professionalism in the bank service offered by diamond bank.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Automation and computer technology were introduced and accepted for solving problems  that related to business, science, engineering, education and all facts of human endeavor.

The more existence of automation and computer technology are not sufficient condition for the fulfillment of the purpose for which they were established.

Quite an insignificant analytical work has been carried out to assess the economic contribution of Diamond Bank in Onitsha, Anambra state Nigeria.

In arriving at this objectives a sound understanding of its impact and a periodic quantitative approval of the performance of automation and computer technology on the overall growth of new generation  Banks particularly Diamond Bank Onitsha is required.

It is strongly anticipated that the outcome of the research work can lead to further improvement in the automation-computer application  strategies and facilities better planning for return purposes.

All said and done, the problem of this study therefore is centered on highlighting the positive impact of automation-introduction and acquisition of superior computer technology on the overgrowth of reference to Diamond Bank Onitsha with a view of affecting additional improvement of the objective.

  • PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose or aim of this study is as follows:

  1. To identify the impact of computer technology on the new generation bank.
  2. To rationalize the introduction of computer technology in banks.
  3. To determine the problems encountered by banks in the introduction of computer technology.
  4. To profer solutions to the problems.
    • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is not only important  but of emormous interest because quite a substantial sum is spent by commercial banks and firms on the acquisition of automation and computer technology and if the effect on services and profitability is negative or unfavorable, the company will either withdraw from the uses of automation and computer technology or improve upon it. But if it is positive or favourable, it will provide up to date information concerning the performance of the bank which no doubt will lead to increase in efficiency and productivity.

This study will be of immense benefit to commercial bank particularly the  new generation ones as they will be able to find out if computer technology as part of the total services, improvement efforts is beneficial to them or not.

It may also be of value and benefit   to computers-manufacturing firms and distributors, experts and scientist as well as practitioners who thrive in the  free society and economy and much dependent on automation and computer technology for growth and survival.

  • RESEARCH QUESTION
  1. What impact has computer technology to the new generation bank.?
  2. What are the problem imposed by the introduction of computer technology?
  3. Has the introduction of computer technology solved the problem of new generation banks?
  4. Has the introduction of computer technology in the bank be rationed?
    • SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is specifically limited to Anambra state. Time and financial constraint were limiting factors to a more detailed work. Uncooperative disposition by some staff and customers of Diamond Bank Onitsha 9individual and corporate) were also limiting factors to a persuasion and patience were exercised to get the required information  from them. All said and done, the data collected and analyzed  were sufficient to make the findings reliable.
