CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Nwafor Orizu College of education is the gateway to quality and functional learning for today’s world. The institution has grown from a modest background to one known for its outstanding teaching standards. Nwafor Orizu College of Education in Nsugbe, Anambra State is named after Prince Abyssinia Akweke Nwafor Orizu (1915 – 1999), Nigeria’s second Senate President from November 16, 1960 to January 15, 1966, during the Nigerian First Republic. Nsugbe is a town in Anambra East Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria. Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe was initially established in 1993 as an NCE offering institution in department of Agricultural science, Biology/Chemistry, Biology/Geography, Biology/Integrated science, Biology/Mathematics, Business Education, Chemistry/Integrated Science, Computer Science Education, Economics/History, Political Science/Mathematics, Language, Physical Health Education, Primary Education studies, and lot more, through the help of Prof. Nwafor Orinzu (NOCEN, 2019).

The development and invent of technology have created high demand for easy job performance in many organizations, companies and institutions or learning. These technologies have brought about “Globalization of the world economy”. No one goes to people’s houses for message and letter deliver anymore. What you just need to do is to hook up with an inter-networked system and then, you can send your message.

What motivated or propelled me to write this project is because of so many reasons; firstly, data insecurity paving way for unauthorized user altering the students’ record due to the manual mode of storing information, delay in registering students’ information, and finally, the password problem arises largely from limitations of humans’ long-term memory (LTM). Having seen the challenges in the existing system, the need for a computerized stock-out awareness application system, will go a long way to easy flow of information in Computer Science department, Nwafor Orizu College of education. The followings are benefits derived in adopting the new system – its provide prompt, secured, efficient and better quality services for students record and provides easy retrieval of students’ record.

  • Statement of the Problems

The password problem arises largely from limitations of humans’ long-term memory (LTM). Once a password has been chosen and learned the user must be able to recall it to log in. But, people regularly forget their passwords. Breakdown and interference explain why people forget their passwords. Items in memory may compete with a password and prevent its accurate recall. If a password is not used frequently it will be even more susceptible to forgetting. A further complication is that users have many passwords for computers, networks, and web sites. The large number of passwords increases interference and is likely to lead to forgetting or confusing conventional passwords. Facing insecurity issues due to the hackers that easy manipulate crazy code to access private application by the use of old model.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim and objective of this study is to design and implement a web-based graphical password authentication system is to work towards the elimination of ineffective mode of operation and to improve the usability features of graphical password.

Some of the objectives include the following;

  1. To design and develop a graphical password authentication system by using selected Graphical Password usability features.
  2. To ensure data security by restricting unauthorized access to the program and to the database.
  • To identify and explore the characteristics, schemes, methods of the graphical password and the conventional password as well as existing usability features.
  1. To implement and test the new scheme by simulating a prototype of the new scheme.
  2. To save the time wasted in trying to recall the existing password due to cumbersome passwords at hand.

1.4 Significance of the Study

Successful design and implementation of this project will help Students to explore more on graphical password scheme, and methods of graphical password. Students can use this project as a research material.

1.5 Scope of the Study

This project is designed to support operation policing by providing graphical password prototype which carries the most usability features to give a usable graphical password system by using Visual basic programming language. It helps to enhance data security for the organization. In view of the scope, Web based graphical password authentication system will be implemented to help in enhancing the data security, stores students’ record in Department of Computer Science Education, Nwafor Orizu College of education.

1.6 Limitations of Study

In the course of carrying out this research work a number of problems were encountered.

  1. Lack of adequate fund to finance the project: this was another limitation to this work because much money is needed to carry out a detailed research work which is not easily borne by every student.
  2. Power Routine: The source and authority of Electric power supply Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) is another limitation of this project. It delayed my project write-up, especially the typing session.
  • The limited knowledge of ASP.net and Visual Basic programming was great challenge to this project. However, more research was made to complete this project successfully.

1.7 Definition of Terms

Analyst: This is a person or professional who studies the problem encountered by a system and creates means of solving them by introducing a better system.

Authentication: is the act of confirming the truth of an attribute of a datum or entity. This might involve confirming the identity of a person or software program, tracing the origin of an artifact or ensuring that a product is what it’s packaging and labeling claims to be.

Code: It is a written guideline that helps to determine whether a specific action is ethical or unethical.

Computer: Computer is an electronic device operating the control of instructions stored in its memory that can accept data (input) manipulate the data according to a specified rules (processing) produces result output and stores the result for future use.

Data processing: is defined as the entire process of converting or manipulating data into definite meaningful information (Adigwe, & Okoye, 2015).

Data: It is the facts collected for decision making they are facts that are kept to be processed to get more information.

Database: is an organized /unique collection of related files. It is a collection of schemas, tables, queries, reports, views and other object.

Design: is the art or process of designing how something will look, work.

Graphical Password: is an authentication system that works by having the user select from images, in specific order, presented in a graphical user interface (GUI).

Information: is a processed data that can be read and understand.

Management Information System (MIS): Information system that generates accurate timely and organized information so that manager and other user can make decision, solve problem supervise activities and track progress.

Password: A password is a form of secret authentication data that is used to control access to a resource.

Security: This helps to prevent unauthorized users from illegally accessing certain data within the database, it protects your data/ files.

Software: These are set of logically related instructions given to the computer to perform some specific task.

System: Is the collection of hardware and software, data information procedure and people.

Web-Based: Web-based application is any program that is accessed over a network connection using Hyper-text transfer protocol (HTTP), rather than existing within a device’s memory.
