ABSTRACT
The effect of employee empowerment in the first bank of Nigeria is the aim of study. Empowerment plays an important role in the effectiveness and efficiency of an organization. The organizations such as first bank of Nigeria are not without problems. Such problems range from poor productivity of employees, poor attitude towards work and lack of necessary skill for carrying out the job. The study was used to control and proffer the solution to various problems. In gathering the facts, ninety nine (99) questionnaire were distributed to the managers and operative of the first bank of Nigeria plc in Enugu urban and eight (80) were completed and returned. Selected sample size which are 99 out of the population of 130 comprising the staff of first Bank of Nigeria plc in Enugu urban was determined using Taro Yamene formula. Hypotheses formulated were tested using chi-square, the result led to major finding which include that adequate employee empowerment enhance efficiency of First Bank of Nigeria, Plc Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: bank should ensure that employee empowerment programme are well structured and planed, equal opportunity for employee empowerment should be given to every member or staff at all level.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Organization such as First Bank of Nigeria plc, are experiencing poor productivity of employee, poor attitude towards work, and the employee who has the necessary skill for his job sees himself as a professional in the organization due to lack of employee empowerment. The importance of human resources to any organization whether public or private has long been identified and cannot be over emphasized. Organizational objectives such as profit maximization, increased market marketer share and social responsibilities cannot be carried out without human beings who co-ordinate the activities of the organization. Staff empowerment is the heart of employee productivity, commitment, motivation and utilization. Many employees have failed in the organization because their needs for training were not identified and provided for as an indispensable part of management function.
There is no amount of automation that can dispense with a large proportion of bank staff since the degree of substitution between capital and men with the industry is small. There is need therefore to study the extent to which employee empowerment has affected organizations and offer suggestion to remove any possible loopholes. Empowerment is an organization effort to improve a person’s ability to perform a job or organizational role, it include what goes to the job as well as formal courses or pragrammes of facilitate learning and established of good work habit.
Reynolds (2004:20) points out that empowerment have a complementary role to play in accelerating learning, it should be reserved for situations that justify a more directed experts led approach rather than viewing it as comprehensive and all persuasive people development.
According to Armstrong (2006:82), Development is an unfolding process that enables people to progress from a present sate of understanding and capacity to a future state in which higher level skills knowledge and competencies are required. Development also deals with the activities undertaken to expose an employee to perform additional duties and to occupy management position in the organizational hierarchy. Development occurs through increased knowledge skill and understanding. It is a progress which individual make in an organization development, is concerned with the top management. In organizations employee empowerment contributes immensely to profit maximization and efficiency. Employee empowerment helps management to achieve organizational objectives and to develop skills and techniques in employees. Staff performance depends on the empowerment that such employees have undergone. Employee empowerment is an important aspect of human resources management, which every personnel manager must be aware of. It is very crucial because of a trained staff is likely to be highly motivated, competent and more productivity.
The significance of employee empowerment becomes more evident as employee face the challenges of new skills which will enable them to maintain their proficiency level or prepare them for future promotion.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Employee empowerment of manpower resource is inevitable and vital in organizations such as the First Bank of Nigeria in the attainment of their goals and objective.
However, the sub problems are listed below;
- Performance deficiency.
- Stagnated level of productivity and efficiency.
- Low employee morale and self esteem.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The broad objectives of this study are to examine the effect of employee empowerment has on organizational performance with special reference to FBN Plc.
- To ascertain the extent to which employee empowerment enhances profitability in First Bank of Nigeria Plc.
- To find out the extent to which employee empowerment can enhance efficiently in First Bank of Nigeria Plc.
- To determine the extent to which employee empowerment enhances customer satisfaction in First Bank of Nigeria Plc.
1.4 Research Questions
The following questions were asked in the course of research.
- To what extent does employee empowerment enhance profitability in first Bank of Nigeria Plc?
- How can employee empowerment enhance efficiency in First Bank of Nigeria plc?
- How does employee empowerment enhance customer’s satisfaction in First Bank of Nigeria Plc?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following hypothesis were formulated
H0: Employee empowerment does not enhance profitability of First Bank of Nigeria Plc.
H1: Employee empowerment enhances profitability of First bank of Nigeria Plc.
H0 Employee empowerment do not enhance efficiency in First Bank of Nigeria plc
H2 Employee empowerment enhances efficiency in First Bank of Nigeria plc.
H0: Employee empowerment does not enhance customer’s satisfaction in first Bank of Nigeria plc.
H3: Employee empowerment enhances customer’s satisfaction in first Bank of Nigeria plc.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The significance of the study includes:
The study will help in broadening your knowledge on the need for employee empowerment. It will identify the effect of employee empowerment on the realization of corporate goals.
It will aid other researchers when carrying out further studies on the topic.
The research will facilitate my graduation. It will help to achieve greater things in the general public by reducing the number of unemployed and increase the number of employment in the society.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The scope of the study covers the effect of employee empowerment in the First Bank of Nigeria plc in Enugu urban.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
The limitation in the course of the study includes:
- Time: Time period given to this work was not enough/
- Finance: it was very expensive to carryout the research, hence I was battling with learn resource.
- Lack of Employee empowerment record and books in First Bank library: The employee empowerment Department does not have an organized library and because, of this concise bulletin kept by the library department were not property documented for easy retrieval.
There were no proper documented books for record in the First Bank library for easy retrieval.
1.9 Definition of Terms
– Employment Empowerment: It is the process of allowing employee to make their own decisions and getting employees involved in helping to make decisions that affect the entire company.
– Empowerment: It is a tool that managers can use to improve the overall performance of the organization.
– Employee: Is an individual who work part time or full time under a contract of employment, whether oral or written, express or implied, and has recognized right and duties.
– Training: Training can be defined as the act of bringing out the best in somebody.
– Development: This can be defined as the various ways of making something or somebody better in other to be of proper use.
– Significance: This can be defined as the importance of the study.
