CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Effective communication and management system have for a long time been trusted as two distinctive fields with no established relationship between them.
However, it is being appreciated by various authorities in the field of management that human being stand at the center of all activities such as economic, social and political with the unavoidable consequences that they must interact and communicate. To this end, they dividing line between effective communication and management system has been thinking out.
It is being conceived that effective communication and management system can now be merged together in order to achieve better management of the limited resources (human and materials) at the disposal of a manager. In essence communication is believe to be very important aspect of management activity. A lot of what management/ managers do essentially thinking, the end of which must be passed on to other whom they work with and through to accomplishing the objectives of the organization. The way the content of their through process is transmitted down the organizational hierarchy matters a lot if the organizational desire should be met. Hence, the importance of effective communication, (Onodugo, 2000).
Experts here identified effective communication as the most vital tool of management (Hall 1978). This is understandable because it is through effective communication that the manager’s dream plan is turned into reality.
According to Hall (1978), the importance of effective communication to the success of an organization is underscored, being research findings which estimate that 70% of man’s life and 90% of a typical manager’s time are spent communicating.
Communicating according to Johnson et al (1994) is a system involving a sender and receiver with implications for feedback. Effective communication can therefore be viewed as the vehicle by which the sender in the management cause action or try to get things done or make things happen. It is a channel of influence or a mechanism of change. Management on the other hand is viewed as a difficult aspect of organization to understand mainly because management consists of and is directed at people. However, management is important and that good management can lead to organization growth and prosperity while poor management can result in its demise.
Indeed, analysis of business farmers over the years have shown a very high percentage of these failure to be attributed. It has been observed that organizations succeed almost invariable to the extract that they are well managed. According to Kootz and D’Donnell (1976), the importance of management is no where better dramatized than in the case of many undeveloped or developing countries where a review of the problem of underdevelopment has shown that provision of capital technology does not bring development. The limiting factor in almost every case has been found to be lack of quality and vigour on the part of managers.
According to keith and crubeline (1971), management is the process of “getting things done through people”. It is one of the best and most meaningful definitions of management because a manager magnifies his own capabilities through the effective use of his subordinators. The effective manager is strongly oriented to subordinates relying on effective communication to keep a parties working as a unit. The ideal manager according to them has complete trust and confident in subordinates in all matters, always get idea and opinions from subordinate and constructively use gives economic reward on basis of group participation and involvement that engages in communication down and up with peers, and encourages decision making throughout the organization.
From above, they seems to be a linckage between communication and management system in an organization as it is evident that organization as an entity provides the frame work within which the management take place.
According to Etzioni (1964), organizations are characterized among other things by division of labour, power and management responsibilities. Hence, it can be concluded that it is difficult to separate communication from management system in an organization.
Based on this proposition, the researcher seeks to ascertain the impact of communication in an organization and find out among others, the level, forms and quality of information being passed in Union Bank of Nigeria Plc by conducting a research on management and managerial performance in an organization.
