Abstract
Family conflicts are prevalent in societies worldwide, and Uyo Local Government Area (L.G.A) in Akwa Ibom State is no exception. This project aims to explore the crucial role parents play in peacebuilding and conflict resolution within families residing in Uyo L.G.A. By examining the unique socio-cultural dynamics and challenges specific to the region, this research seeks to shed light on effective strategies that parents can employ to foster harmony and resolve conflicts in the family unit.
The project will emphasize the significance of open and effective communication as a fundamental aspect of peaceful family dynamics. It will examine how parents can create an environment that encourages honest expression of thoughts, feelings, and concerns, and promotes active listening and empathy. By establishing a safe and non-judgmental space, parents can facilitate effective communication, enabling family members to address conflicts openly and find mutually agreeable solutions.
Furthermore, the project will explore the vital role of parents as mediators in resolving family conflicts. Parents will be encouraged to assume a neutral stance, guiding and facilitating dialogue between conflicting parties. Through the acquisition and application of conflict resolution skills, such as compromise, negotiation, and active problem-solving, parents can empower family members to find common ground and restore peace within the household.
This study will also investigate the socio-cultural context of Uyo L.G.A and its influence on family conflicts. By understanding the unique dynamics, traditions, and values prevalent in the community, parents can tailor their peacebuilding strategies to align with the local context, increasing the chances of successful conflict resolution.
The research will employ a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews, focus groups, and observation methods to gather data. It will involve a diverse range of families from Uyo L.G.A, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced and the strategies employed by parents in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
The findings of this project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on family dynamics and conflict resolution, with a specific focus on the role of parents in Uyo L.G.A, Akwa Ibom State. The research outcomes will provide valuable insights and practical recommendations for parents, community leaders, and policymakers to foster peaceful family environments and enhance social cohesion within the region.
Chapter One
Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Family conflicts are prevalent worldwide, and Nigeria is no exception. In Nigeria, family conflicts are often characterized by tensions, misunderstandings, and disagreements between family members, which can lead to negative outcomes such as physical violence, emotional trauma, and family breakdown (Adebayo, 2019; Nwankwo, 2020). The impact of family conflicts extends beyond the family unit, affecting the broader society’s social cohesion and economic development (Obioha, 2018). Therefore, the importance of addressing family conflicts and fostering peaceful family relationships cannot be overstated.
In Uyo L.G.A, Akwa Ibom State, family conflicts are a significant concern. According to a study by the National Population Commission (2019), Uyo L.G.A has one of the highest divorce rates in the state, with 30% of marriages ending in divorce. The study also highlighted the adverse effects of family conflicts on children’s mental health and well-being, affecting their academic performance and social relationships. Therefore, understanding the dynamics of family conflicts and identifying effective strategies for peacebuilding and conflict resolution within households is crucial for promoting family well-being and social harmony in Uyo L.G.A.
1.2 Problem Statement
Despite the pervasive nature of family conflicts in Uyo L.G.A, there is a dearth of research on effective strategies for peacebuilding and conflict resolution within households. Existing literature on family conflicts in Nigeria tends to focus on the prevalence and causes of family conflicts rather than exploring practical solutions to promote peaceful family relationships (Nwankwo, 2020). Moreover, while Nigerian literature offers rich narratives and perspectives on family conflicts, the insights and recommendations provided by Nigerian authors and scholars are often overlooked in academic research on family conflicts in Nigeria.
Therefore, this study seeks to fill the research gap by examining family conflicts in Uyo L.G.A and exploring the role of parents in peacebuilding and conflict resolution within households. The study aims to draw on insights from Nigerian literature and explore culturally sensitive and contextually relevant strategies for promoting peaceful family relationships.
1.3 Research Questions
The following research questions will guide this study:
- What are the patterns and dynamics of family conflicts in Uyo L.G.A?
- What is the role of parents in peacebuilding and conflict resolution within households in Uyo L.G.A?
- How can insights from Nigerian literature be incorporated into effective strategies for promoting peaceful family relationships in Uyo L.G.A?
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The study’s objectives are as follows:
- To explore the patterns and dynamics of family conflicts in Uyo L.G.A.
- To examine the role of parents in peacebuilding and conflict resolution within households in Uyo L.G.A.
- To integrate insights from Nigerian literature into effective strategies for promoting peaceful family relationships in Uyo L.G.A.
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study holds significant importance for the understanding and improvement of family dynamics, peacebuilding, and conflict resolution within households in Uyo L.G.A, Akwa Ibom State. By drawing on insights from Nigerian authors and scholars, such as Wole Soyinka and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who have explored themes of family conflicts and parental roles in their works, this research will provide a culturally grounded understanding of the challenges and opportunities for peacebuilding within the local context.
Nigerian literature offers rich narratives and perspectives on family conflicts, highlighting the complex interplay between cultural norms, societal expectations, and individual aspirations. By incorporating the wisdom and experiences shared by Nigerian authors, this study aims to provide practical recommendations and insights that resonate with the unique socio-cultural dynamics of Uyo L.G.A, fostering effective conflict resolution and peaceful family environments.
1.6 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on family conflicts and the role of parents in peacebuilding and conflict resolution within households in Uyo L.G.A, Akwa Ibom State. The research will primarily utilize qualitative methods, such as interviews and focus groups, to gather data from individuals and families in the local community. The inclusion of insights from Nigerian literature will provide a valuable lens through which to analyze and interpret the dynamics of family conflicts and the role of parents in peacebuilding.
However, it is important to acknowledge certain limitations of this study. Firstly, the findings may not be generalizable beyond the specific context of Uyo L.G.A. Family dynamics and conflict resolution strategies can vary across different regions of Nigeria due to cultural, social, and economic factors. Therefore, caution should be exercised when applying the findings to other contexts. Secondly, the interpretations drawn from literary works are subjective and open to multiple perspectives. While Nigerian literature offers valuable insights, they should be considered in conjunction with empirical research and practical experiences.
1.7 Organization of the Study
This study is organized into five chapters. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background, problem statement, research questions, objectives, and significance of the study. Chapter 2 reviews relevant literature on family conflicts, peacebuilding, and the role of parents, incorporating insights from Nigerian authors and scholars such as Buchi Emecheta and Cyprian Ekwensi. Chapter 3 outlines the research methodology, including data collection and analysis procedures. Chapter 4 presents the findings of the study, integrating empirical data and insights from Nigerian literature. Chapter 5 concludes the research by summarizing the key findings, discussing their implications, and providing recommendations for future research and practice.
Through a comprehensive exploration of family conflicts and the role of parents in peacebuilding, this study seeks to contribute to the existing body of knowledge while addressing the specific context of Uyo L.G.A, Akwa Ibom State. By integrating insights from Nigerian authors and scholars, it aspires to offer culturally sensitive and contextually relevant recommendations to promote harmonious family relationships and strengthen social cohesion within the community.
