CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Stress management is the ability to maintain control when situation, people and events make excessive demands.  Stress management refers to the wide spectrum of techniques and psychchology aimed at controlling a person’s level of stress especially chronic stress, usually for the purpose of improving everyday functioning.

Stress produces numerous symptoms which vary according to person, situations and several these include physical health decline as in as depression.  The process of stress management is named a one of the keys to a happy and successful life in our modern society.  Although, life provides numerous demands that can prove difficult to handle, stress management provides a number of ways to manage anxiety and maintain overall well- being.

There are several models of stress management each with distinctive explanation of mechanisms for controlling stress.  Research shows that stress is called by distinct, measurable life stressors which are ranked by the median degree of stress they produce; this was traditionally conceptualized to be a result of external insults beyond the control of those experiencing it.  Most recently, it has been argued that external circumstances do to have any intrinsic capacity to produce stress but instead their effect is mediated by the individual perception, capacities and understanding.

Stress management involves controlling and reducing the tension that occurs, in stressful situation by making emotional and physical changes. The degree of stress and the desire to make the changes will determine how much improvement takes place.

However, it has been noticed that factors like attitude, diet, physical activity, support systems tend to trigger or reduce stress.  A negative attitude often report more stress than a positive attitude.  A poor diet puts the body in a state of physical stress and weakens the immune system.  Not getting enough physical activity can put the body in a stressed state.  Almost everyone needs someone in their life, they can rely on when they are having a hard time.  Having little or no support makes stressful situations even more difficult to deal with or manage.

Stress management is therefore a remedy to every kind of stress.
