CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Rural community development encompasses a range of approaches and activities that aim to improve the welfare and livehoods of people living in rural areas. As a branch of community development, these approaches pay attention to social issues particularly community organizing.

Recently, the issue of rural development has become crucial in the political, social and economic life of the nation. This can be attributed to the fact that rural areas and their inhabitant constitutes about sixty percent or above of the nation’s population.

According to the radical school, they believe that development should be man-oriented, that man constitutes the base to which development can be achieved. What this means that for development can be developed by using his initiative to transform hiss environment in order to take out a living and be self sufficient among others. The government on its own cannot solely shoulder responsibilities of the government of the entire nations. It therefore becomes imperative that effective development strategies should be planned/ geared towards the active participation of the citizens to enable them benefit from the government efforts. For a realistic development to be sustained in the rural areas there must exist active collaboration between the governments, non-governmental agencies/organization. The rural people need the recognities and productive organization for quicker development. They should be involved in decision-making process and this will go along way in encouraging them. Since the past few decades, various non-governmental organizations have shown interest in the development of the rural areas.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Development of rural areas has been constant issue in Nigeria recent economic and political history. In order to make this issue a reality there is the need to involve a system that will activate the participation and support of the rural people productive and social organization. Non-governmental organization being one of the major effective instruments for the development of rural areas have not actually made enough impact on the social and physical aspects of development owing to the factors below.

  1. Nigeria’s poor economy makes it difficult for both government and non-governmental bodies to engage in development activities. This is because most development projects embarked up by various non-governmental organization are capital intensive and so financial incapability therefore becomes a hitch for the realization of the objective set by these organizations towards development.
  2. The problem being envisaged is how to make the non-governmental organizations and government to enter into full partnership for a quicker development of the rural areas.
  • Most people are noted for their excessive materialism projects and self-agendisment with personal material interest. Usually, these people hardly initiate natural development activities. This problem therefore calls for how to achieve a better orientation of the people towards national development.
