CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the study

The prime purpose of teachers or educators is to aid learners in the achievement of new knowledge and skills. In line with this, the teacher’s constant problem is how to convey to students certain ideas, basic knowledge and information in a most effective way. To achieve this  and to help the learner in retaining the knowledge, teaching materials like visual aids are practically essential(Nouri and  Shahid,2010).

Visual aids according to Merriam Webster is an instructional device (as a chart, map, or model) that appeals chiefly to vision that is used to make something easier to understand. According to Stoner,(2015) the use of visual aids can better convey what words alone cannot, explain abstract concepts, help retention of information, and can maintain audience’s interest. Visual aids are known to help students to be more engaged in subjects during classes, help retain information, and achieve better comprehension(Rizwana& Muhammad,2010)

A visual stimulant help students in creating the proper mental image of learning. Oral or printed words usually do not mean much to students until it is translated into a mental image for clearer understanding. The total effect of visual aid is the important factor in the teaching situation(Stavrianeas and Stewart,2011). Such aids have certain distinct influences on the student and result in a more complete comprehension of the subject. The impact of learning through visual aids may be reflected in the learner’s effective acquisition of nursing student enable them attain new knowledge and skills as well as positive attitude towards achieving certain goal.

Students learn more when information is delivered in variety of ways rather than in only one way. Chuah and Sinar(2013) explained that students retain 10% of what they read, 15% of what they hear, 15% of what they see, and 50% of what they see and hear. Thus, it is more helpful to use visual aids during lectures. A visual stimulant will help in creating the proper mental image for the learner and that is a true basis of learning. Oral or printed words usually mean nothing to students until translated into a mental image. The total effect of the visual aid is the important factor in the teaching situation. Such aids have certain distinct influences on the student and result in a more complete comprehension of the subject. The impact of learning through visual aids may be reflected in the learner’s effective acquisition of new knowledge and skills as well as positive attitude towards the certain subjects.

Visual aids can also address three modes of learning which consist of the cognitive, affective and psychomotor learning’s.

Statement of the Problem

Audio visual aids are effective tool that make learning to be real to student. It provides the learners with realistic experience, which help capture the attention of students and help them fully understand  the subject being taught. This is because visual aid appeals to the mind through the visual auditory senses and makes learning more easy and simple for students (Jain,2014).Visual aid makes teaching and learning process more effective and makes student to retain what is  taught. It’s also gives chance to speakers (lecturers) to make a more professional and consistent presentation.          In teaching profession today, audio visual help improve the academic lives of students by making some concepts and educational objectives more easy for students to grasp. Thoughother will require one to think creatively to ensure that important learning objectives are met. Despite the availability of audio visual in teaching profession, most of the teachers do not use adequate visual aids as teaching materials in business education subjects. This  create a problem as it cause a barriers to teaching and learning process and directly affects the learning outcomes of student especially in nursing education where a lot of rigorous process is involved.

Sometimes, visual aid is not even employed at all by teachers in teaching business education students. All this pose a serious problem in understanding and the assimilating process of learning. This has necessitated the study  on audio visual aids and the teaching of business subjects in secondary schools.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study is to investigative audio visual aids and the teaching of business subjects in secondary schools. Specifically, the study will ascertain the following assumption,

  1. Extent of the availability of audio visual aid in in teaching business education subjects.
  2. The extent of the use of visual aid in teaching business subjects.
  3. The effect of audio visual aid on the learning process of students in business education subjects.

 

 

Significance of the Study

The study will be of benefit to teachers(Lecturers), students, curriculum planer and to future researchers.

Teachers (lecturers) will benefit from the study as the study will enlighten them on the importance of using visual a more often in teaching their student. This will make their teaching more meaningful to student and makes teacher  appreciate the more the  powerful effect of teaching aid in making their teaching process more easy for them and less time consuming on explaining some difficult concept of business subjects

Students will benefit from the study as the study will  help  them to  see how effective visual aid can improve their knowledge on business  education subjects. It will also make  thememploy the use of visual aid in their personal study in order to improve their academic performance.

Curriculum planers will benefit from this study  as the study will enable them to see the value of  audio visual in  improving the teaching  of  business education subject. It will also make them implement the use of audio visual in all the aspect of the curriculum so as to enhance the  teaching and learning of business  education in Nigeria.

Future researchers will also benefit from this study as the study will serve as source of material and reference for other related studies.
