ABSTRACT

 

The major purpose of this study was to know “The Work Ethics and Productivity in Business Organizations in Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of one hundred and fifty (150) staff from the organization.  The sample for the study was 100 staff out of 150 staff.  Eight (8) research questions were formulated which guided the study.  A structured questionnaire was developed, validated and tested for its reliability. Percentages and tables were used to answer the research questions. The major findings, of the study were agreed by the majority of the staff that work ethics affects productivity or performance in business organizations in Nigeria.  Hence, work ethics has effect on employees performance in an organization. It was recommended that management should also embark on screening exercise, training and development of personnel, adequate creation of disciplinary measures etc, as tools to increase workers performance in an organization.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the following headings shall be discussed.

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Every organization desires to function effectively and the extent to which this desire will be achieved depends on how well the human resources are moved to contribute to the accomplishment of the set organizational objectives.

According to Fred et al (1980:24) organization came into being to pursue collective ends and that the control of part of the contribution of an organization are the set agreement about goals that are understood to be a major constraints. He explained further that, not only do good represent a set of constituency agreement, they also focused organizational productivity on a problem field, which is organization goals, along with belief about how to attain them.

According to business dictionary, an organization is a social entity that has collective goal and is linked to an external environment.  An organizational structure consists of activities such as task allocation, coordination and supervision, which are directed towards the achievement of organizational aims. It can also be considered as the viewing glass or perspective through which individuals see their organization and its environment.

According to Datong and et al(2003:4), organizational structure is the functional structure that include lines of authority and responsibility that connects and co-ordinates individual emphasis. It then means that work ethics is the boarding of any organizations productivity. Every organization desire to set the limited resources which are manned by people with the comment, with the spirit of enterprise and all those willing to work and sufficiently motivated by the organization, by the attraction of better productivity. Along with this, is the crucial question of strong organizational, ethics, which must not request any interest, whether for person or clique, the focus here is a new organization work ethics.

According to Koontz et al (1980:828) ethic is a set of generally accepted standard of social conduction=. He noted that employees attitude to their duties are responsibility is a determinant of organizations productivity their commitment and loyalty to their organizations and their possible attitude to peers and superiors in the course of their job performance are necessary requirement for organization core values have hearing effects on results, managers need to build positive work attitude for the attainments of their organization objectives.

Egeolu (2006) noted that ethics in the work place about prioritizing moral values for the work place and ensuring behavior are achieved with those values, its value management, therefore ineffective work ethics aften affects the structure, composition and function of an organization negatively, in which effective productivity has been made difficult.

It is against this backdrop that this research shall find out whether work ethics affect organization productivity.

  • SATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Several factors have been considered instrumental to the purported inefficiency or unproductive nature of most organization. These include among others, management problems, communication problem, lacking technological innovation, work ethics etc.

This research work shall find out whether ethics is influenced by problems of poor adherence of employment to with ethics in the organization and technology and whether these factors poses problems of performances in Aqua Rapha investment Nigeria Limited Enugu. This study is an attempt to find out whether work ethics has any bearing on organizational effectiveness.

 

  • OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The following are the objectives of this research work:

  1. To find out whether work ethics affect productivity in Aqua Rapha Investment Nigeria Limited.
  2. To find out whether poor work ethic is responsible for decline in workers output in Aqua Rapha Investment Nigeria Limited.
  3. To identify factors that has negative effects employee attitude to work in Aqua Rapha investment Nigeria Limited,
  4. To find out whether discipline promotes workers in Aqua Rapha Investment Nigeria Limited.

 

 

  • RESEARCH QUESTIONS/HYPOTHESIS

This research work will sought answers to the following questions.

  1. Does work ethics affect productivity in Aqua Rapha investment Nigeria Limited?
  2. Is poor work ethics responsible for decline in workers output in Aqua Rapha Investment Nigeria Limited?
  3. Does discipline promote workers output or productivity in Aqua Rapha Investment Nigeria Limited?
  4. Does work ethics enhance workers’ performance in Aqua Rapha Investment Nigeria Limited?

1.5 HYPOTHESIS

Ho:  Work ethics does not affect organizational productivity in Aqua Rapha investment Nigeria Limited.

H1:  Work ethics affect organizational productivity in Aqua Rapha Investment Nigeria Limited.

Ho:  Work ethics does not enhance workers’ performance in Aqua Rapha investment Nigeria limited.

H1:  Work ethics enhance workers’ performance in Aqua Rapha Investment Nigeria.

Ho:  Organization does not depend on discipline to enhance workers’ productivity.

H1:  Organization depends in discipline to enhance workers’ productivity in Aqua Rapha investment Nigeria Limited

Ho: Organizational inefficiency is not caused by poor employee attitude to work in Aqua Rapha Investment Nigeria Limited.

H1: Organizational inefficiency is caused by poor employee attitude to work in Aqua Rapha Investment

 

 

  • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study shall be relevant in several aspects. Firstly, the researcher believes that an in-depth study of the work ethics and productivity and the outcome of the evaluation would no doubt assist managers, chief executives designing effective work ethics for their organisaiton. In designing a result oriented development programme policy and work ethics for an improved organizational productivity, this study is significant. Secondly, a lot of human and material resources have been devoted towards achieving an organizational productivity. Therefore this research work shall play a vital role in the mobilization of the consequences of neglecting human resources and its effects in organizational productivity.

It is assumed that at the end of the study, the research will stimulate on intellectual discourse for further research and for organization’s reference points.

  • SCOPE OF THE STUUDY

This project shall be limited to Aqua Rapha Investment Nigeria Limited Enugu, in the area of its workforce. In other words, the researcher deals essentially with the human resources and organizational productivity. However, the literatures are drawn from various scholars, writers, lecture notes and speeches on work ethic and employee performances.

  • LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

A number of constraints were encountered in the context of the research. The first and foremost is the difficulties in getting material from the organization,  apart from the time constraints, bureaucratic bottleneck in Aqua Rapha investment Nigeria Limited did not permit easy access to the necessary documents. Also, constraints such as network failure, electricity or power supply problems, transportation problem etc also limited this study and above all, academic work proved to be a constraint.

  • DEFINITION OF TERMS
  1. Ethics: This refers to a set of general accepted standard of social conduct.
  2. Work: Doing something that involves physical mental effort, especially as part of a job.
  3. Organization: This refers to a group of people who come together in order to achieve a particular goal or aim in a well defined setting.
  4. Productivity: This is the efficient performance of individuals and groups in the organization, the rate at which an organization produce goods and the amount produced, compared with how much time, work and resources is needed to produce them.
