ABSTRACT

It goes without saying that the question of democratic governance and challenges of development in Nigeria has become the most important one which revolves around the existence of the country in space and time. The question could be paramount than issues on economic situation, political factors nexus between the religious groups and polity issues on national integration as it concerns the country and questions on institutional development rule of law, education and so on of views has swung between causes. One effect of the foregoing issues, although, many solutions have been proffered, little has been achieved to attain over all speedy and actual development in the country and there has to be recurrent crises in almost all sectors of development. It is argues that Nigeria has a great chance to learn from the barrage of crises that have haunted national development since 2009, by way of institutionalization, so much so that there could be a fitted and regular way of doing things for overall development of the country. The prospect is enormous of incumbent and future administrators can learn to look at national experience since 2009 to sieve our pros and cons for pence, unity and stability of the country. This study was designed essentially as a descriptive survey; the study was covered the period of 2009 and date. Data were collected from federal office of statistics (FOS) statistical technique employed was moving average method of time model. These are the summary of all the chapters in this project, which comprises five (5) chapters including the bibliography and appendix.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In Nigeria democratic governance is of immense important for efficacious, regional integration and development. It is also of great importance to situate dynamics of social democratic governance, regional integration and development. From a strict technical stand point, the nation of governance derives the conceptual status as being historical part of the assemblage of the state. The rotating of the executive or administrative functions of the state with a view of fulfilling terms of social contract, consequently, there are persuasive instances of crisis of legitimating and social conflict due to non attainment of vested interest and aspirations of the citizenry.

Widespread instance of corruption in public and private sectors of Nigeria exacerbates conditions poverty, thereby reproducing poor governance. In view of the historically determined reasonability of the state to enhance reasonable conditions of living for individual and groups in society, we propose that determination of leadership in a given society is a function of the extents to which the state particularly through effective social democratic governance is able to enhance the amelioration of the human conditions. Nigeria as a nation has witnessed conflicts resulting crisis. (Vanguard, Thursday march 1985; daily times, Wednesday may 10 2000; Daily sun Thursday 30 December 2010.) These have had tremendous effects not only on the nation stability (with treats of disintegration of the nation oozing out now and then) but also on the gross national economic and technological development as a result of the wanton destruction of life and property that followed these crises.

Perhaps, the Nigeria peoples perception of conflicts and habitual response to conflict situation which are evident in that interactive that to on the homes, markets places, roads social and educational institutions. Governmental establishments may yield some data whose proposal for development conflict resolutions strategy for the citizenry may be made and popularized. There is need for Nigeria’s to develop the ability to deal with difference. Moreover, a crisis of governance is invariably associated with negation or lack of fulfillment of popular vested interest.

Crisis of development and democratic governance in Nigeria come in various forms because these crises are manifold. There are also the concomitant problems of distinguishing between direct and indirect crises. Hence, this presents yet another problem of not being able to proffer complete resolution to the country’s crises of development. Basically this

1.4  RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following questions were raised by the researcher to determine areas, dimensions, degree and preponderance of crisis of governance and development in the country. It goes without saying, therefore, that a comprehensive resolution to any crisis cannot be achieved without an adequate understanding and insight into the problems.

  1. Can absolute peace and justice be achieved through application of rule of law or are there certain people or circumstance above the rule of law in Nigeria?
  2. To what extent does the government in particular and society in general balance reason with emotion in conflict resolution within the polity and crisis of governance in Nigeria?
  3. Apart from government measures in curbing crisis, what measures do the Nigerian people employ to demonstrate non-acceptance of the various crisis that haunt our national polity?
  4. In the face of these disagreements, can there be any reasonable prospect of compromise in order to engender peace, unity, stability and progress in our dear country?
