ABSTRACT

The use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching Mathematics: Nigerian teachers perspective formed the basis of this study. The study was designed to find out the perception of secondary school Mathematics teachers about the use of ICT in teaching Mathematics. The study specifically centred on finding the need of enhancing teacher education programme so as to serve as an avenue of improving teachers perception and orientation on ICT in Mathematics teaching. It also sought for the most common ICT applications available for Mathematics teachers to use. Barriers to the integration of ICT were also examined. The study adopted a survey design. A sample size of 180 was used. This comprises of Mathematics teachers who were randomly selected from secondary schools in Enugu state — the area of the study. The questionnaire used for data collection had 26 items which covered the scope of the study. The data collected were analysed with mean score with a bench mark of 2.50. Among the findings made were that Mathematics teachers were found to be enthusiastic about the application of ICT in Mathematics teaching but only few were already incorporation it in their teaching. Most Mathematics teachers were discovered to be willing and ready to integrate ICT in their teaching. Again the most common ICT applications used by the few teachers who are already making effort to integrate ICT into their teaching include: word processing packages, spreadsheet, drill/practice tutorials and graphic applications. These applications are less technical and easy to manipulate. Among the leading barriers to the ICT usage in secondary school Mathematics teaching as found out in the study were: lack of enough technical skills for ICT projects, poor electricity power supply in schools and lack of Mathematics laboratories with ICT facilities. Owning to the findings, the following recommendations were madethat: Mathematics teachers should be encouraged to embrace the new method of teaching (use of ICT) and pursue it with all the zeal it deserves; in-service training, especially on ICT usage in Mathematics lesson be made compulsory for all Mathematics teachers; seminars and conferences be organized by experts for teachers, especially Mathematics teachers on ICT usage in teaching; and state government should make frank efforts to provide all the necessary facilities and equipment for the proper ICT usage in teaching secondary school Mathematics.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of Study

Mathematics has been vital to the development of civilization, from ancient to modern times it has been fundamental to advances in science, engineering, and philosophy. Mathematics is also essential to the world’s economy, especially as the age of big data gallops forward. A degree in these subjects will equip you with extensive expertise in probability and statistics, with options to specialize in pure mathematics or applied mathematics. The basis of the course is typically structured around algebra and calculus, and then you can specialize in topics such as codes and cryptography, fluid mechanics and even mathematical biology. (Walker & Helen, 2019).

Computational mathematics proposes and studies methods for solving mathematical problems that are typically too large for human numerical capacity. Numerical analysis studies methods for problems in analysis using functional analysis and approximation theory; numerical analysis includes the study of approximation and discretization broadly with special concern for rounding errors. Numerical analysis and, more broadly, scientific computing also study non-analytic topics of mathematical science, especially algorithmic matrix and graph theory. Other areas of computational mathematics include computer algebra and symbolic computation.

The project work design and implementation of a Computer aided learning in teaching Business Mathematics, is a system that is capable of teaching students’  and also solve problems associated with Business Mathematics. The program will be implemented using Stand-alone application (C#) so as to provide an interactive interface which will in turn make the learning process interactive.

 

 

1.2 Statement of the Problems

Before the invention of computer system man solely relied on his brain to perform calculations; as the complexity and size of calculations increased, man began to face the problem of speed and his work being prone to errors. In an attempt to aid the brain several computational methods were developed with the help of programming language using computer, programs were written to meet user’s tasks. Thus application programs were designed to aid mathematicians in solving complex and difficult problems.

The problems that are mostly encounter with the manual method of solving mathematical problems are:

  1. Speed: Since computer is an electronic device it is electronically fast, It can operate at the speed of electricity Thus computer can carry out work much faster than humans to better appreciate the speed of a computer it is estimated to carry out millions of instruction in a matter of minute that will take people a lifetime to complete.
  2. Efficiency: using manual computation of mathematical problems will not be as efficient to that of computer as it will be slow and prone to errors.
  • Accuracy: Computer can process large volume of data and generate error free results, provided the instructions are well defined and the data correctly entered.
  1. Error: During the manual computation of any mathematical problem a list of errors usually occurs and because of the errors the correct result of the solution takes a long period of time to be guaranteed.

 

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this research work is to develop a program which will be used in solving mathematical problems associated with Business Mathematics; the objectives are;

  1. To aid efficiency, speed, reliability etc. as opposed to the manual method.

 

 

1.4 Significance of the Study

The use of a computerized business mathematics calculator system will go a long way to solve the problems encountered in the existing system used in Mathematics Education, Measurement and Evaluation in ESUT, Enugu State. However, the computerization of business mathematics calculator system will provide advantages such as speedy calculation, efficiency, accuracy, and error-free record, it will help in a good number of ways to ease the process of retrieving data and records in the system. This study will serve as a useful reference material to other researchers seeking related information. Afterwards, further development can be made on the project work in accordance to the rapid development in information technology in the near future.

 

1.5 Scope of the Study

The scope of this study is limited to designing a Computer -Aided Learning to teach Business Mathematics is limited solving Business Mathematics problems for Mathematics Education, Measurement and Evaluation in ESUT, Enugu state, which will serve as a central repository for the institution.

 

1.6 Limitations of the Study

In the course of carrying out this research work a number of problems were encountered.

  1. Lack of adequate fund to finance the project: this was another limitation to this work because much money is needed to carry out a detailed research work which is not easily borne by every student.
  2. The limited knowledge of Visual Basic programming was great challenge to this project. However, more research was made to complete this project successfully.
  • Time Constraints: Looking at the interval between the resumption of the final semester, the time given is too short for collection of required information and a more comprehensive fact finding for a better work would have been done if given enough time.

 

 

1.7 Research Questions

The researcher formulated the following research questions to guide the study:

  1. What are the needs of enhancing the teacher education programme so as to improve the perception of Mathematics teachers on ICT usage in teaching secondary school Mathematics?
  2. What are the most common ICT applications used by Mathematics teachers in the classroom?
  • What are the possible challenges of ICT usage in Mathematics teaching in secondary schools?

 

1.8 Definition of Terms

Administrator: Person who is responsible for software installation, management, information and maintenance of a computer.

Automation: This is the use of technology or computers to control and process data reducing the need for human intervention.

Business Math: Also called commercial math or consumer math with emphasis on computational skills and its practical application for business.

Business: System where goods and services are exchanged for money.

Capital: Finances needed to sustain a business.

Data: These are raw facts which are not yet processed. Data is measured, collected, reported and analyzed, whereupon it can be visualized using graphs or images.

 

 

Security: This helps to prevent unauthorized users from illegally accessing certain data within the database, it protects your data/ files.

Software: is a program or a set of programs written to carry out some task in the computer, it also perform logical related programs that works together to control the hardware. Or these are set of logically related instructions given to the computer to perform some specific task.

System: Is the collection of hardware and software, data information procedure and people.
